It’s Valentine’s Day – time for some #GiveHealthy Love!

gh love to fight

We know so many people who love to fight hunger!  It’s why our community keeps growing!  And we’re thrilled to announce that Chef Greg Silverman has joined the #GiveHealthy Advisory Board.  Chef Greg Silverman is the Executive Director of the West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH), in New York City. Through a supermarket-style food pantry, WSCAH alleviates hunger and creates a culture that promotes change and self-reliance. WSCAH reaches almost 10,000 families every year, providing social service support and culinary job training, while distributing over 1.5 million pounds of healthy food.

WSCAH is working to change everyone’s perception of hungry people by providing food with dignity and empowering people to find solutions. Chef Greg has worked in the food and hunger space for over 20 years. He previously served as the National Director of Program Partnerships for Share Our Strength and it’s No Kid Hungry Campaign where amongst much food access work he led the national growth of the Cooking Matters nutrition education platform across all 50 states.

Welcome, Chef Greg!

The Big Apple – a Perfect Place to #GiveHealthy

It’s always a thrill to visit a hunger relief organization and see them in action.  I’ve never met someone working at a food pantry, food bank, soup kitchen or shelter that wasn’t passionate about the work that they do and welcoming to visitors – whether people coming for assistance or just stopping by to say hello.

Some #GiveHealthy Team members stopped by the West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH) in New York City recently to enjoy a double thrill – both the visit and the delivery of over ONE TON of healthy food courtesy of two #GiveHealthy Food Drives – one sponsored by the Stroock Law Firm and another sponsored by WSCAH themselves!

What does a #GiveHealthy food delivery look like?  What do excited WSCAH team members look like? See for yourself!

Teens that Rock!

Curbing Hunger Youth Council 6.8.17

We’re seeing more and more groups interested in organizing a #GiveHealthy Food Drive and this one caught our attention.  The Curbing Hunger Youth Council is a group of teens supporting the mission of Curbing Hunger.  Curbing Hunger has been raising food for hunger organizations for over 20 years to help them during the summer, a time when donations drop at the very time the number of people in need grow (from school aged children supporting by school feeding programs during the school year).  Kudos to these young people making a difference!  We think they ROCK!  Feel like supporting their drive?  You can donate here.

Neighbor to Neighbor – WOW!

Infographic-for-case-study - neighbor to neighbor - no quote

We’ve been working closely with a terrific food pantry that serves people in and around Greenwich, Connecticut on a CASE STUDY to see what happens when groups begin to organize #GiveHealthy food drives. The short answer:  WOW!

WOW!  means they raise more food, they raise healthy food and have alot of fun doing it. For Neighbor to Neighbor, besides getting lots of fresh produce and other healthy food, they get to know the people making those donations!  85% of the people making a #GiveHealthy donation were new donors! (or, if they had donated canned goods before, Neighbor to Neighbor had no way to know that).

At Amp – we’re constantly looking for ways to help in more ways than one – its what we talk about and what we know we are designed to do.  It’s great to have strong data that backs up what we tell people!

We Made the List(s)!

We’re always thrilled to get some recognition for what we’re doing and that’s been happening more and more.  We just found out that we’re going to be included in the prestigious 2017 Good Food Org Guide presented by The James Beard Foundation and Food Tank (we were in the 2016 Guide as well).

We’re also now listed in ReFed’s Food Waste Innovator Data Base for working on ways to reduce food waste and fight hunger at the same time.   How cool is that!

We also made a very special Rodale’s Organic Life Magazine list – very, very cool!

And, finally, we’re on the Food Tank List of most innovative companies to watch in 2017!

By the way – we agree!

#GiveHealthy Launches!

We announced #GiveHealthy in March and the #GiveHealthy movement launched at the Broccoli City Festival in Washington DC on May 6, 2017.   The Festival is about many things, including great music, culture and social impact.  And its about healthy food access, particularly in urban areas.   A perfect place to launch our movement to change the most common form of giving in the US so that everyone donates healthy food.  Some pretty cool shots of people getting excited and having fun at the #GiveHealthy launch!

#GiveHealthy Gets Going!

#GiveHealthy is the start of a movement and it starts today!  That’s big news.  We’re thrilled to be a part of it.

Donating food is the most popular form of giving in the United States.  More people donate food than watch the Superbowl.  That’s the good news.

The not good news?  A lot of the food people donate is unhealthy.  Highly processed canned goods.

Why does this matter?  Because hunger is a health issue.  People struggling with hunger also face high rates of diet related health issues – obesity, diabetes, cancer and more.

They need healthy food, not just any old food.

That’s where #GiveHealthy comes in.  It’s designed to raise things like fresh fruits, fresh vegetables and other healthy food and to heighten public awareness that hunger is a health issue.

So instead of donating this:

People donate things like this:

This is what healthy food looks like!

I hope you will check out #GiveHealthy and Get Involved.
